I believe that the Hirsbrunner HBS 390 has a tuning slide in the leadpipe as did the older Martin Eb's and I think Dr. Marzan put some of his there, too. It seems to me that those are all very respectable tubas that have stood the tests of time. Also, the Yamaha YBB 103 has a tuning slide in the leadpipe, and I think it is a very nice little horn (although there seems to be a bit of controversy on that point with my brother posters).

Nothing inherently wrong with putting a tuning slide in a leadpipe. Like so many others have said, go play it for yourself, and if it's right for you, then it doesn't matter what other people (except maybe your teacher) say.
