When I read that you'll always be miked, and that you plan to play with a rock band, I couldn't help thinking that the ideal horn would be small, so you could easily play it standing (maybe even moving around on stage a little). A small tuba would let you put a little on the sound when you want, too.

It sounds to me like you might find the Weril 680 (the smaller Weril) to your liking. I recently read a message by Joe that, I think, said he could get you a new Weril with a case for $2000. I've played one sample, and really liked it a lot. If you are anywhere remotely near Memphis or Baltimore (who else sells these besides Midsouth & Baltimore Brass?), I think it would be worth your trouble to go try out a 680.

Joe Baker, who wonders what tuba Dave Bargeron played in BS&T.
