Basically, artists saying, "Okay, fine, you think art is getting dumb now, take a look at this!"

I wouldn't be surprised if Cage is part of that branch. He did explore the far reaches of what could be considered music, or at least organized sound. Maybe he was playing the audience as well, much like Andy Kaufman was often doing. At least now we know what a bunch of radios really sounds like.

I've joked about writing an arrangement of 4'33" for brass quintet and calling it 2'06". ;-)
