I would agree with you on your view that you are part artist, part scientist. It's hard to be purely one or the other. Like you say, how you and your instrument speak and what you say/play is the artistic/musical side of the equation. There is a little science sprinkled in there though: pushing/pulling slides to stay in tune, keeping the instrument maintained so as to keep a good sound, etc.

As a physician and surgeon, I'm part scientist, but part artist also. Just like music, medicine is a mixture of both. Knowing the book stuff, which medicines to use and how to use them, which surgery to perform, etc. is the science part. However, there is an art to getting a person to trust you enough to do a proper physical exam. There is an art to talking with people and getting them to "open up" and obtain a thorough history.

I'll be interested to hear what others think.
