You'd have to, as the open bugle isn't the only thing that seems to go into the X/4 equation -- bore size also seems to be part of it.

So, you'd have to mash down the valves underwater. BUT to simplify, I'd suggest always mashing down valves 1,2,3. All tubas have 3 valves. I'd suggest that these three are the most important to indicate the overall characteristic of the horn. OR, you could add the 4th, and then claim all "serious" tubas have at least 4 valves . . . .

Now if I only had a pool . . . .
