While there may seem to be a "good ol boy" network, it definately does not exist. The real situation is the rise in standards. As our standards for tuba/euph players rise, many people get left in the dust, as they may feel many things are impossible, or just impractical to learn on tuba or euphonium. While I may not like the fact that Brian Bowmans students do so well at auditions, I cannot deny that he is teaching them something very good. Taking an audition is an extremely hard thing to do and there is a special way to prepare for it. Since Brian Bowman (he isn't the only one, but a shining example) has so many students in the finals, it is neither by chance nor lechery that his students did so well. He has raised the bar and expects all of his students to do the same. There are lots of people at that school on euph, many as grad students and doctoral candidates. When you consider the amount of students he sent, plus the fact that they are adhereing to a higher standard, they are bound to succeed. More people need to respect the methodology and show some hard work and discipline instead of making it seem impossible to reach their level.
