I would not spend $1,000 on an 1140. My high school had three of these and they always felt stuffy and did not seem to help new players develop a good sound. This is the only King tuba/sousa that I don't like. You probably would be better off checking with one of the guys at any of the stores listed under the shops section or finding a local tuba instructer and getting his advice. Maybe a Conn 5J, 10J, or 12J would be a better horn. It's what I played in High School (besides a sousaphone) and the band director replaced the 1140s with them. I eventually bought a cerveny 686 by my sophomore year because I wanted a larger bore horn.
