There are two versions of the Boehme Sextet. I have seen only the Robert King version, in which the bottom part is indicated as being for "Baritone." Although playable on a high tuba, I can see this part requiring a lot of chops through the duration of this four movement piece. The original version was a step lower, but I gather that it is less popular because nobody wants to cope with the large number of flats in the key signature. Anyway, I'm stuck with the Rbt. King version, and it seems to be the only one owned by the universities in my area. My question to those who know both versions: In his desire to create a baritone or euphonium part for his own use with the old Boston Brass, did Mr. King alter the low part other than through the whole step transposition? I wonder if one could justify taking a few places down the octave? Thanks for any information.
