As a former member of the 249th Army band in West Virginia, I can tell you that I had a great time in the band. Guard bands are a lot of fun, both musically and socially. The Band officer, CWO4 Thomas Goff, is an excellent musician, and encouraged music majors at nearby universities to come check out the band, which is how I joined. There were times that I was allowed to conduct and rehearse the band. The 249th was composed mainly of local musicians and band directors, which also provided a valuable link to the teaching/gigging community.
In order to be in any Guard/Reserve band, you have to go through regular Army basic training, just like the active bands. The level of musicianship can be anywhere from mind blowing to high school level players. I had a wonderful time in the 249th-I recommend the Guard/Reserve band program fully!
