in my experience (as the parent of a flute player) the highest relative prices are commanded not by new flutes, but by vintage flutes from the top makers. My daughter's 1950's Powell handmade is worth several thousand more than a new one in the NYC professional market. Although newer flutes are easier to play, they don't have the tone color of the 'golden age' ('20's through 50's) Powell and Haynes flutes.
