If you have a good 3 or 4 octave scale or ten on your horn, but not starting or ending on the tonic, you should practice those too.

I think it's a big mental trap to think of scales as being a nice clean 2 or 3 octaves starting and ending on the tonic. For example, a C-major scale starting on A and ending on F could be very valuable ear training. You really need to feel at home ANYWHERE within a scale.
