Some info about Texas orchestra troubles - including Fort Worth:

In Sunday's (1/26) Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Wayne Lee Gay writes: "A spell
of rough economic weather has hit the state's symphonies. The four largest
orchestras in Texas -- the Fort Worth Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the San
Antonio Symphony and the Houston Symphony -- face unprecedented deficits.
Pay cuts are already in effect in San Antonio, and a cut in salary and
players has been proposed for the Houston Symphony. If better players start
looking for greener pastures, and the best young players continue to look
for the best pay, musical quality will decline." He asks, "Is Texas'
hard-won status as a state with fine orchestras in danger?" Jack McAuliffe,
"vice president of the American Symphony Orchestra League," says, "The
economic downturn affects all of us ... And nonprofit organizations are
particularly vulnerable. This year, probably a majority of the orchestras in
the country will post deficits." He adds, "Orchestras are resilient ...
Communities tend to not let orchestras die."
