There is a great article by Dave Zerkel in the Winter 2003 issue of ITEA Journal about solo literature on CC tuba. Well written and very practical, the article divides the list of solos into 3 levels of difficulty. Part 2 of this article is scheduled to appear in the next ITEA Journal edition.

Dave states that some people think that it has become "uncool" to play solos on a contrabass tuba. While admitting that the lighter color emanating from a bass tuba has its merits in solo performance, Dave makes several points that advocate the study, if not the actual performance, of solos on a contrabass tuba even if you do have access to an Eb or F tuba. He also cites the economic issue: if you can only afford one horn, it should be the one on which you'll do 90% of your work, the contrabass. Therefore, one should not shy away from solos on the contrabass tuba.
