you can tell when something has been digitally edited, especially if it's done in a studio by someone who doesn't play tuba. often times the studio guy will added reverb or other sound altering tricks to "help" the sound. this can often times be painfully obvious to a listener. "splicing" would be very strongly advised against as this would immediatly disqualify you from the process. i know a guy who was invited to a very recent "big" audition who used very affordable equipment and made a legit tape of those requested exerpts with absolutely no splices other than track inserts. he could play them near perfect for a recording and it showed by his ability to advance to the finals. the good players can play through the exerpts without splices. those who need the aid of splicing will stick out like a sore thumb in the first round. it's a waste of time and money to invest in such engineering. if the panel desires that you to play the exerpt near perfect at the audition, shouldn't you be able to play it near perfect for nothing other then a microphone? not nearly as much pressure there.
