The product is called "Auto-Tune". It is a real double-edged sword. I have done recordings where one note in the violins was out of tune, so instead of a re-record, they process the section through this device. I am not up on all the technical stuff with it, but I have been told that it isn't a be-all-end-all corrective solution. If I understand right, it works best with large groups of players where there is a pitch center established. I am sure someone else will chime in with more intricate details.
