This sort of thing does exist at every level. I remember (Many Many Years ago) being accepted as Tuba forthe National YOUTH orchestra. only to be later rejected because i played on a Besson Eb. If it happeens in Youth, it happens in serious orchestras.

While on annecdotes:

this was told me by a trombone player whowas in the orchestra at the Time, and Paul, correct me if this is slightly out.

After Georg Solti's Tenure at LPO (i think), he returned back as Guest conducter.

Seeing a new face on Principal trumpet, he shouts out, "You, trumpet , WHO ARE YOU!"
"PAUL" shouts back Paul Archibald. "WHAT TRUMPET YOU PLAY" calls Georg. "BACH!" retorts Paul. Georg shouts back "We no play that rubbish here, go get a proper trumpet"

Appartently Sir Georg had a habbit of always overrunnig rehersals by a few minutes. Dead on time, Paul archibald Calls out, "Sir Georg, what kind of batton you use?"
First time Sir Georg finished a rehersal early.
