Just so happens that I have a copy of Finale 2001D installed on my Win2K system and I use an external MIDI keyboard. Here's what works for me.

Pull down the MIDI menu from the main Finale display, click on "MIDI Setup". You'll get a box with two menu list selections. One is "MIDI In Device" and the other is "MIDI Out Device". Since you've got only a no-keyboard (MIDI out) device, look at that box. Select from the list the driver that has "MPU401" in its name. In my case, it's "Riptide MPU401". If you click on the "Advanced" button, you'll also get a channel display that will allow you to direct different channels to different devices. Click the checkbox that says "Reset MIDI" (just in case). At the bottom of that same dialog box, you'll see the MIDI driver version.

If this looks right, check your cabling.
