I was visiting full professor of energy at PSU for several years. Being also a tubist, I was very familiar with the music departments (there are two of them!) at PSU. PSU is a simulated university comprised of simulated students and simulated professors and absolutely horrible administrators. There are few real scholars there and virtually no really top flight musicians. In such and environment ones progress is governed more by politics than by excellence in ones field. Really good people do not find PSU a satisfactory place to teach although the community of State College has some advantages. However, it is very remote and transportation to places like Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Pittsburgh is difficult and expensive.

If you are really anyting but a trickster and politician, avoid the Pennsylvania State University!!!!
