I think it's important not to exaggerate the differences, but I do feel that taller bells help out for a single tuba player who's seated way in the back of the stage. An obvious exception would be if the player is using a big mothership of a horn, such a Yorkbrunner or M-W 2165. Conversely, I've never enjoyed using stove-pipe belled horns for chamber music and soloing. Maybe this is why I like Bessons more than many people do, because I find the bells on them to be neither too tall, nor too short and squat either. I've never really thought about that before, but it could a factor as to why those horns are appealling (sp?) to me.
