This is about the same situation I had after my first year at an expensive private university. I had to lay low at the local junior college for a year while sorting out options. After knocking around for a year I ended up studying chemical engineering, which, granted isn't necessarily the right option for everyone.
Anyway, if you need to buy time for the loans, attending the local JC might help. Plus you can try your hand at a different major.
