This may sound silly, but consider always wearing a shirt with long sleeves to protect the finish of the instrument from the acids and oils on your skin. Having bought a rebuilt tuba last year, I have even gone to the extent of wearing soft jersey gloves while I'm playing. I know, that sounds really silly, but I just want the finish to last as long as possible. Some band directors in my area even require that their students wear their white gloves from marching season when they play their concert instruments, especially the newer instruments.
