Hmmm, an interesting question ... I have purchased 5 tubas, and four of them were 'sight unseen'.
To be more accurate, 3 were 'fun' purchases and were more in the project category and not really for serious playing ... so I don't think they really count (wishful thinking ?-).
The other two are my 'real' instruments ... the first I played before I paid for it. The second I tried while on a trip and decided it was the model for me ... then located / negotiated for the same model (but a physically different horn) via the Internet and ended up paying for it before I picked it up (Miraphone 191 -- wonderful instrument!!!). So I would say it's 50/50 :-).
