I had pretty much the opposite experience. I played an Alex euph for 30 years, and
struggled mightily with intonation. Middle Bb was flat (or I needed to shorten the first
and second valve loops). I played all the fifth partials with alternate fingerings, as well as a couple of the sixth partials. But, such a tone. And such efficiency of
sound.

As the horn warmed up or cooled off, its intonation changed more than any other horn I
have ever owned. I got used to it, and thought this is just how it is. Then I bought a
Hirsbrunner euph and found a horn that stays in tune. I don't have to pull the main tuning slide except when the group I am playing with is off. I still use alternate fingerings for the fifth partials, but I could get away without doing so.

I think the thin brass that Alexander uses has a lot to do with the tone; the Alex
weighed about 1/2 the weight of the Hirsbrunner.
