One question about your theory. Does everyone sound the same when they play your tuba? Your students will learn your style of playing and mimic your sound as they sit next to you in a lesson and you say, "Now try sounding more like this." I don't know for sure the answer to Josh's questions. I can say I've heard great players sound great on any horn and bad players suck on every horn.
Based on those observations, my suggestion to overwhelmed first time buyers is to get the equipment that is the most accurate for the individual player, and spend more time learning the music instead of overcoming a bad match of horn and player. Still, you are right. If the player has a strong enough concept of great playing, he/she will achieve it regardless of the equipment. My opinion too, and now back to work for me. Matt
