I started playing a musical instrument in the eighth grade in a small school with a small band (about 60 at the time). My instrument was the trombone. I was an OK player, but probably never would have been really good. About a week before my band was to go to our yearly district marching contest, our (only) tuba player dropped out of the band. being the band director's kid, i was the one who got a crash course on playing the tuba. miraculously, i picked up the instrument pretty well and was able to play the music by the end of the week. as a result of that incident, and marching band, i found out that my God-given talent was NOT for the trombone, but instead for the tuba. my point is, at least for me, marching band saved me from a life of musical frusteration on the trombone.
