It would be interesting to learn how individual horns are selected for bright lacquer/silver vs satin lacquer/silver finishing. For example, perhaps the best looking horns, after soldering, are usually chosen for bright (shiny) finishes, while those with more flaws get sandblasted. Alternatively, perhaps a batch of ten horns are bright silver plated, then another batch of ten are lacquered, and so on; depending on who happens to be assembling those batches those days, the lacquered or bright silver or satin silver horns might be the best players, but the best-playing finish would change from week to week. It may, also, be that one assembler just has a knack for putting together good-playing horns, even though those horns may have indifferent cosmetics.
