This ball allows for a quite simple type of playing stand to be seen through the link. Just a small hemispheric bowl at the end of a telescopic stand.
Rumour has it, that an equivalent bowl was intergrated in the saddles of mounted tuba players as seen in the British mounted military bands (tThe Blues and Royals and the Life Guards).
I have tried that system on a band owned Besson BBb. Worked very well, only the tuba itself was a nightmare.
