John,

Wait until you share in the wedding of your daughter, or are requested to play
at a funeral for a friend or family member. Aside from the sheer mass of people
in the emotional setting you described, there is no difference. Rightly so,
you allude to the goal we all share as musicians, to touch people (and BE touched ourselves) in what is often a deeply emotional way. But that sense of emotion
is no more an exclusive claim of field performers as it is for bassoon-playing
chamber musicians, and it makes as much sense to compel a bassoonist to march
as it would for a field band to perform at a funeral (or my daughter's wedding!)

Dale "I still wouldn't hire a bassoonist to play at the reception" P.
