If you are using copyrighted music (Circle C copyright notice on the music) that is still under copyright protection as the music for your tuba duet I do not think that you have to get any permission from the copyright owner to make a recording of the song. If you are going to sell your recording you will need to pay a royalty fee to the copyright owner (Circle C) that is handled through The Harry Fox agency, ASCAP, or BMI. The problem is when you start rearranging the copyrighted music. If you rearrange the music or lyrics you do need the permission of the copyright owner before you can use the rearranged version. If you want to get a sound recording copyright (Circle P) for your duet you must then put the proper copyright notice on your label and send in two copies of your duet or album along with the proper form and fee to the Copyright Office to register your Circle P copyright. Refer to Mark's link to the Copyright Office above. I think the owner of a music and lyric copyright (Circle C) would love to have as many artists as possible perform their song so they could receive all the royalties possible.
Phil.
