I had to do marching band during my undergrad as well. It really made me mad because you are taking a minimum 6 hours of class and only getting a 1 hour credit! I could have been doing other things during the week, like practice, study, etc.... However, if it had not been for marching band in high school, I would still be playing the clarinet! Fiddlers(Ha!) and double reeds should just bite the bullet and double on another instrument. It can only help to make a person a better musician. Yeah I know it's marching band, but you can't just expect to make the demand of a band director to exclude you from marching when the rest of us have no choice, no matter how great a player you are! I know of several directors who would kick someone out of the music program altogether if they wouldn't commit to the group. Be it band, orchestra, or yes, even marching band.
