I'd suggest one of three things; 1) Have it lacquered- it will shine, and be best preserved. 2) Forget the shine- just wash it regularly, and let it turn brown. As long as there is no green or pink noted on the finish, it is healthy brass. 3) If it MUST be unlacquered and it MUST shine, try an automotive paste wax. It won't shine well for very long, and it will offer only limited protection, but it is better than nothing.
