Aren't you overlooking that fact that beam strength (presumably closely related to dent resistance) goes up as the cube of the beam depth (metal thickness)? I thought that was the big advantage of lighter composites: if you can tolerate the thickness, thicker, but lighter materials are far stiffer than stronger, thinner, and heavier materials sized to have the same weight? Am I misunderstanding the theory?

Also, I think you mean .043" for nickel-silver to have the same strength as .050" brass.
