Oh, yes, I remember Bell Bikers. Back in my youth, those of us who pretended to race bikes would not be seen wearing a helmet. We preferred occasional concussions.
I suspect a bow guard such as you describe would get just about the same consideration from tuba players, who would insist that the guard damps vibrations (despite that they have no problem holding the tuba on, um, gooey legs).
