I don't believe that very many talents are inborn. My tuba playing certainly doesn't much resemble the tuba playing that I did the first time that I gave it a shot, as as bad a tennis player as I am, a similar statement holds true.
Jamie Aebersold has a very extensive series of improvisational-instructive c.d.'s with books. Three or four of them cover the basics and the rest of them are basically studies in various styles and "giants"-o-jazz.
Buy a couple of the basic ones and have fun!
