If raising the temperature to about 170 degrees (considering the boiling water won't stay at boiling temperature even as you would be pouring it it) did damage, then tubas should NEVER be left in automobiles, etc. (and we know that leaving a tuba in a hot car trunk doesn't harm it...at least not mine). However, the hot water won't do anything...

...Is it a SULFUR odor (as silver oxide emits)?
