Try the neoprene knee, elbow, wrist, etc. braces. Someone on the board recommended them a while back. I tried a knee and elbow brace to cover a couple of sections on my horn. They work great, and are easy to use (with velcro). I can't see any reason that they would cause any damage to the finish, and they would have to repel water (neoprene).
I picked up a couple at the grocery store the other day. Cost under $10 each, and fit very neatly.
I'm, told that Walmart has them, but I bought two at the grocery store. I have seen different lengths, sizes, and colors, so you shouldn't be short on options. If you do a search on the internet (neoprene elbow brace), you will also find a lot of pictures and such.
