Hmmm...This would be analagous to the complete Czerny piano etudes that actually did get recorded and released by Musical Heritage Society (MHS) about 30 years ago. You certainly wouldn't want to listen to the recordings straight through! But as a reference on an individual basis, I agree with Bill that it would be valuable to hear recordings of the pieces from Arban performed well on tuba.

I heard a "basement recording" of one of the Arban Characteristic Etudes by Arnold Jacobs. It was extremely instructive--particularly his breathing technique, his choice of notes to discretely delete, etc. And as everyone would expect, he made beautiful music out of something that otherwise would be considered dull, dry, and mundane.

A few of the pieces from Arban, of course, HAVE been recorded commercially, in one form or another. For instance, Pat Sheridan recorded "Variations on a Tyrolean Theme," arranged for tuba and brass band by Mark Freeh, on the "Blazing Brass" CD.
