It roughly means that tempos are approximate...go with the tempo of the other player. In the Sonate, the piano part is a real bear. Also, with the issue of tempos in mind, the recording of Glenn Gould and Abe Torchinski is notibly slower than many other recordings. The tempo they used was certainly the product of Gould's thoughtful interpretation.
