Mark,

I do not have extensive experience with St. Petes, but I did play one once, and thought that the sound was nice, and dark as well. Taken on tone quality alone, I felt it was an instrument that I could grow to like very much, but at the same time, I did notice that the valves were not as smooth as I was used to.

The prevailing attitude seems to be that the St. Petes are just not well made. They are reported to dent easily, have sub-standard valves, and have a finish that wears off too quickly.

While they may be tempting because of price, I would personally look elsewhere for a horn. If an instrument is going to present constant maintenance issues for you, it might be better to get a deal on a used instrument that will hold up better.

Perhaps people with more direct experience will speak up, but I just thought that I would offer....
...my $0.02 worth.

Cheers,

Larry Zaidan
