As someone who has never won a major professional audition, I'd say to go take that very question to a player/teacher who's, *been there - done that*. Furthermore, as Jay Bertolet would say, go to somebody who has had a high rate success in getting his/her students placed in pro. situations. His remark made sense to me.

Also, if you know the tunes that are going to be asked for (orchestral excerpts, etc.), I would certainly take the time and trouble to listen to them on recordings and thus, learn how those pieces go. That way, the excerpts won't seem so abstract. Studying scores is never a bad thing either, but that's more of a side issue in this context, I think.
