I recently had a humbling experience. I had a lesson with Scott Mendoker last week. I heard him warming up as I took my horns out of my car and walked up to his door. For those of you who haven't met Mr. Mendoker, I will say that he was extremely nice to me and he has IMHO a great sound. He played my PT4P and I was in awe with the power and presence of the low notes that he was hitting on my horn. I realized that I could get my horn to sound the way I want it to but that I need more work. So I feel that the player is about 98% responsible for the sound of the horn and the way it plays.
