It's most always the player. I had a tuba that I was bitching about that was not up to par, and Mr. Morris (Winston) took it and made it sound the same as he did on his horn, and said, "It's not the horn, man." I also read in the TUBA Journal a few years ago in an article entitled "An International Success Story," by John Stevens about Roland Szentpali and his friend Tomas, who were 15 and playing tubas literally held together by bubble gum and tape because of the poor conditions in Hungary. Mr. Stevens said that even with those, they were playing well for players "of any age." I think in 99% of cases, it's the player, because I suspect that Mr. Jacobs could have picked up a Jupiter BBb and made it sound like heaven.
