I have seen Sam perform live many times. He has always played the Bell Model at those performances that I attended. One with a solid bell and another with a removable bell. Please play one of these horns ASAP to see that they have a Huge sound and has great FOCUS. The latter word is the reason the former word can be used. Nothing personal, but your original post sounded like you were looking down your nose at his equipment. Those of us who replied must have gotten the same impression, hence your defense.
