A simple mouthpiece position change while playing a note while have a much more profound effect on tone (and lips' position) than a change in air intensity. If the lips are kept in the same position, air change will influence only volume (loudness). Happily, once a note is started, the instrument's reflective feedback helps sustain it. It's initiating a true, clean vibration that's the real challenge.

Please don't assume we all studied with Jake. I never met him nor studied with anyone influenced by him. (If you're not making that assumption about me, I apologize). To me this should all make mechanical sense. I find in the brass world there's a greater desire to assert a point of view than demonstrate its validity.
