I think the advise below is sound. But, I really don't think that meter is all that critical. If you approach this as improvised, then you should have a lot of latitude. Play what you feel in a spontaneous way....don't play it the same way twice. I don't have the music in front of me just now, but I think you could probably not even worry about pulse for the first 16 bars or so. .......the "schtick" is more in the interval spacing of the pitches rather than the metric spacing of the note values. Later in the movement you are directed back to a defined meter. If your playing it without piano, then you probably have more latitude to "weird-out".
