even the most basic, cheap tape recorder with a built in microphone will tell the truth about how you are playing.
I now use a sony Mini disc recorder and the sony dynamic mic.. The best mic I used other wise was a SHURE that was made for low freqencies, (maybe originally for bass drum on a trap set)
I also try different mic placements depending on the room and my mood. In a practice room, close mic near the bell. In a hall, near the center of the room.
