I like the short 23 combination as well. On my F it makes the beginning licks in the Vaughan-Williams a bit easier technically. The reason for this is that the pedal F can be reached by having all the valves down where as with a whole step pitched fifth valved it would have to be played open because the there isn't any other way to play it. This all valved F is also good for the first movement of Mahler 1. The pitch is better, for me at least, using it on notes such as the B-flat below the staff (235).
