Well, I returned my copy of Bevan's "The Tuba Family" to the library a few weeks back, so I don't remember the exact details. The tuba was invented in Prussia in 1835, but I forget the name on the patent. "The Tuba Family" provides all the gory details, and the history of the serpent, the opheclide, and other 'precursors' or contemporary instruments that were around in the same time period.

Rick Denney just received a new copy of the 2nd edition of this great text. He should be able to provide a few extra details.
