I have used a side loading ProTec bag for several years and have found it to be the most trouble free bag of any that I've owned. I'm certainly an absent-minded person at times, (I've left tuners, music stands, and even eyeglasses behind at gigs and rehearsals) but I've never forgotten to zip the bag. The zipper shows no signs of wear after several years of use with some heavy horns. The fittings are all metal and the back straps have a sort of safety harness so that the bag won't fall off your back if if either strap comes loose. This last feature has saved several tubas from catastrophe. The bag is padded nicely and has several pouches, inside and out. The price is very reasonable, as well. In response to your posting, I've never heard of any side-loader giving way.
