I assume you have pistons. The felts do wear out, and need replacing. The time period of 6 months may or may not be accurate, depending on how much playing you do and the quality of the felts your repairman uses. You can check the alignment yourself. Shine a flashlight down the tube and depress the valve. The holes should line up.
